With the steady increase in frequency of flash floods occurring in monsoon-hit areas such as Jakarta, persistent rainfall often results in flash flood. This in turn triggers a mass power shutdown in civilisations as a precautionary measure, as the uprooted cables pose an electrocution threat.
Yet, the very action of a power shutdown causes further increased threats as the cities are plunged into darkness.
Derived from the Swedish word ström, whose meaning doubles as both hydro current and electrical current, the STRÖM System is a hybrid storm drain system designed to kick in when power outage occurs and provide backup power sources in street lamps and emergency shelters.
The STRÖM System turns the flooding issue right on its head by harnessing the very flood water during flash floods to provide backup power source.
